Today I am writing in Japanese and English so our readers can practice their English, and so my Swiss friend, Priska, can read our blog.
This is our fourth week in St Moritz. Next week we are returning to Tokyo so this will be our last blog from St Moritz. We will be leaving the beutiful scenery in St Moritz.
I did my last long run with my friends from the UK.
As the World Championships marathon draws closer, I am starting to feel nervous and a little stressed. I am wondering if the training I have done is enough, and if it will be useful? This is part of life for an elite athlete so you cannot avoid it. But how you deal with such stress is important. I have been using some strategies I learned from talking with Sarah Cecil, the Sports Psychologist from the English Institute of Sport. For example, I think about all the preparation I have done, what my strengths as a marathon runner are, and what my race strategy should be. By thinking about these things, stress disappears and I feel more confident. At the same time, it is important to do something different or have a change of scene, in order to forget about the source of stress.
This week, between training we crossed the Swiss border into Italy for a change of scene. I was struck by how the atmosphere changes as soon as you cross the border.
Also we rode up a cable car near St Moritz and saw some glacier. In the heat of Osaka it might be good to think about this cold glacier as I am running!
This week, a Swiss cyclist who I became friends with last year, Priska Doppman, came to St Moritz for training. She is here by herself so we have meals together. She is a cyclist for the Swiss women`s elite cycling team, Raleigh Pro Cycling Team, and she also owns the team. This team has many world class cyclists amongst its members. The top British cyclist, Nicole Cooke, is also a member.

From talking with Priska I realised that the marathon and cycling have many similarities. For example, the volume of training is large so nutrition and hydration are very important. If you don’t eat properly, you can suffer nutrition deficiencies and your performance in training goes down. Also when planning training, you can use heart rate zones (for example you can separate aerobic and anaerobic training). Priska has had a long career as a top cyclist, so she is good at handling stress! I was feeling tired and stressed, I chatted with Priska about it. She was very kind and gave me some good advice about handling stress. She told me that she participated in the Road Race and Time Trial at the Athens Olympics. In the Road Race, she was under so much pressure that her performance was poor. But for the Time Trial, she ignored the pressure and approached the race thinking `it doesn’t matter if I don’t win`. As a result she performed very well. I learned a great deal from Priska!
We are returning to Japan next Tuesday. Now I am looking forward to my final preparations and the World Championships!
